Magic from Matrot in 2022
The Matrot family have a long history in Burgundy, starting off as negociants, but eventually settling down in Meursault and began domaine bottling in the 1920s. The naming has bounced around over the years, but has now settled in as husband and wife "Thierry et Pascale Matrot", though production has been in the hands of their daughters Elsa and Adele since 2016 and the buzz around the producer has been sensational.
The reserved use of new oak is much appreciated and part of the family history. In Elsa's meeting with Neal Martin, she said her Grandfather used to sell his new barrels to Michelot and Roulot, then buy them back the after they had been used for a vintage, thus creating his own "used barrel" program.
We finally got our hands on a decent selection of the wines to offer you today, but I doubt they will be around long at these prices! As Neal Martin said, "This domaine is quickly improving under sisters Elsa and Adele Matrot. The 2022s are perhaps the best that I have tasted to date. This is a domaine going places. Hitch a ride."
2022 Thierry et Pascale Matrot
Bourgogne Chardonnay - JM 89-91 (5 Stars)
"80% comes from Meursault from Vaux Malpoiriers, Coutures and Lameroses, plus their own vines in the Hautes Cotes and some purchased fruit from near Chablis. 17% new wood, seasoning it for subsequent use in the 2023 cru vineyards. Pure clear colour. An absolutely gorgeous immediate juicy fruit, riotously delicious. This is exactly what I want to drink, with a perfect balancing acidity." - Jasper Morris, Oct 2023
Maranges Rouge - VM 90-92
"Filtered the previous week, has a perfumed red cherry and blueberry-tinged bouquet. The palate is sweet on the entry with crushed strawberry, raspberry fruit and gentle grip with commendable clarity on the finish. Simply a delightful regional red." - Vinous, Oct 2023
Auxey-Duresses Rouge - VM 89-91
"The 2022 Auxey-Duresses Rouge, picked just before the Maranges, seems a little riper on the nose than Matrot's other red cuvees. Slightly confit in style. The palate is medium-bodied, quite juicy and sweet, with candied orange peel commingling with red fruit. There’s more grip and density towards the finish than the preceding Monthelie. Delicious." - Vinous, Oct 2023
Meursault - JM 90-92
"Made from twelve plots in all, using one to five year old barrels. Pale in colour with a lime tint. The nose is not yet very forthcoming but the balance on the palate is exquisite. White fruit, a little bit in the rounder style of old but this will not become buttery. Instead, it is a delightful mouthful of orchard fruit with a good follow through of natural acidity." - Jasper Morris, Oct 2023
Meursault 1er Cru Blagny - JM 92-95
"Fresh pale lemon. Loads of energy here on the nose, but all perfectly balanced. Maximum minerals in this wine which Elsa thinks will be suppressed by longer oak ageing. More flesh than usual in the middle, with a fine persistence." - Jasper Morris, Oct 2023
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chalumeaux - VM 92-94
"The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Chalumaux 1er Cru is much more expressive on the nose than the La Garenne, which is apparently always the way. Quince, Japanese yuzu and wilted yellow flowers infuse the citrus fruit, a hint of frangipane appears with aeration. The palate is very taut and concentrated on the entry, with fine acidity. It’s slightly viscous in texture but holds on to Puligny DNA and fans out wonderfully on the finish. Superb." - Vinous, Oct 2023
Meursault 1er Cru Charmes - VM 93-95
"The 2022 Meursault Charmes 1er Cru has a complex bouquet with enticing scents of lemon verbena, chamomile and orchard fruit, and a light nuttiness in the background. The well-balanced palate has a fine bead of acidity, a light veneer of acacia honey, and a hint of ginger. Harmonious with real weight and elegance towards the finish. This is a beautifully crafted Meursault that should age effortlessly over the next 15-20 years." - Vinous, Oct 2023
